The influence of our working environment

We spend most of our time at work. Sitting at a desk, for the majority of people.

We attach importance to decorating our living room; we want to feel good at home, or at least more and more so, but what about the office? You’ll say it doesn’t always depend on you.

There is a close link between the workspace, its impact on the occupant and their productivity – both positively and negatively. A person who is satisfied with the physical and aesthetic comfort of their working environment is in better conditions and therefore more inclined to produce quality work, with results that will be felt both in their own well-being and in their performance within the company.

But our societies are evolving, and so is the way we work.

Our professional landscape is changing, just like our pace and our habits. Offices are taking on other forms and adapting, just as we, as creators of spaces, must face up to these changes.

Open-plan offices are reinventing themselves: private offices, shared offices and convivial spaces alternate; we need contact but also a space of our own. Everyone must find what suits them, with the aim of creating a true collaborative atmosphere, conducive to creativity and productivity, and fostering well-being and communication.

Spaces are increasingly being planted with greenery to improve the health and productivity of their occupants: roof terraces, entrance halls, green walls, indoor garden plots,..  (article on biophilia and its benefits coming soon!

At home, it’s another story. Working from home has become commonplace; many people have acquired a taste for it, and it has now become a choice. But while this change is positive for some, others still find it very difficult to bring the notion of work into their private space.

For lack of space or ideas, we end up squatting at the kitchen table. We somewhat forget our comfort, we let ourselves get caught up in the daily routine and we forget that we spend most of our time in a space that fundamentally doesn’t suit us.

I want to sound the alarm! You cannot imagine the impact that this neglect of your environment can have on your physical and mental health, and on your life in general.

Ask yourself the right questions: is my office space properly separated from my private living space? Is there enough light? Is my chair comfortable? Do I feel like sitting down at my desk in the morning? Is it visually appealing to me?

It doesn’t matter whether you live in a studio, a flat or a shared house, or even whether you have a room set aside as an office that you don’t like going into.

Start by taking stock of your well-being and, if you can’t get yourself going, ask those close to you for their opinion, or opt for a telephone consultation or a well-being assessment with a professional to help you get things moving and give you a few ideas, an impetus.

If you wish to go further or hand the task straight over to someone else, then opt for decoration coaching, in which you can set yourself a budget while moving forward at your own pace, knowing where you are heading.
