Designing spaces: the kitchen

Whether or not you love to cook, the kitchen goes hand in hand with conviviality, sharing and joy.

“Let food be thy medicine,” said Hippocrates. It is a room linked to our health – in short, linked to life itself.

Closed, open, semi-open: the kitchen has evolved over time to the point of blending completely into our living space. It has become many things at once: besides preparing meals there, we can eat, work, entertain,..

In terms of layout, it is important to keep your worktop clear. Visually, practically and energetically alike, it is a spot that needs to be kept tidy: avoid cluttering it with appliances on display, and keep only what you use every day.

When it comes to storage, keep food and other goods that don’t much like the light, as well as crockery you rarely use, in closed cupboards.

On open shelves, display instead the objects you like, that you want to see and/or that you use often.

Lighting matters too. General lighting plus direct lighting over the worktop, so you can see clearly while cooking, or to create a softer mood in the evening by switching on only the latter.

Airing and ventilation are very important. On top of the room containing a water point, cooking fumes and smells are also harmful to your space if you don’t air it properly. There are now many alternatives across every price range and to suit your needs, but in addition to the extractor hood, open the windows as much as possible.

When it comes to decor, we are always afraid to be bold in choosing kitchen furniture. Admittedly, these are pieces that will very often stay put along with the walls, so I advise you to opt for timeless units, and to treat yourself and dare to be playful instead in your choice of splashback, wall colour, seating and lamps.

On your shelves, display objects that you like and that reflect who you are.

Once again, this is a room that breathes life and joy and, above all, one that has to last over time, so we opt for hard-wearing, durable materials.
