Designing spaces: the home office

Summer is drawing to a close, many of you are already back at work, and the idea of swapping our beach towel for our office chair doesn’t exactly thrill us. Our working environment is very important – see my previous article on the influence of our working environment!

Here are a few tips to make your days at the office more pleasant.

Firstly: air the room as much as possible. A well-ventilated space allows the brain to function properly and helps you concentrate better.

Secondly: light. It is very important for your eyes and your general well-being. First of all, favour good natural light, followed by ceiling lighting that covers the whole room well, complemented by task lighting directly on the desk.

Thirdly: air-purifying plants. As well as being pleasant to look at and creating a pleasant atmosphere, most plants help to purify the air you breathe. Ivy, lavender, aloe vera, ficus, certain palms…

A comfortable office chair is obviously a priority to protect your back; you can also alternate with a yoga ball, for example, to change posture more often and stay active. Your desk must also be spacious enough for the tasks you need to carry out: a good distance from your screen, and enough space to rest your forearms and a notebook, and to spread out a few papers.

We mustn’t forget our acoustic comfort either. Whether you are at home or in the office, it is important to have as much quiet around you as possible. There are acoustic panels that also double as folding screens to give you more privacy and create a separation between your spaces.

Personalise your desk and treat yourself. We spend most of our time sitting there. Whether at work or at home, it is important that this space is comfortable and helps you feel good day to day. It is, of course, a place that should above all promote calm and concentration. Avoid nostalgic photos; favour natural materials and decorations with motivating, uplifting messages to encourage you.

Don’t forget to take breaks. Ideally 5 minutes every hour, with longer breaks here and there.
