Designing spaces: the bathroom

Bathrooms are special spaces in a home.

Combining function and well-being, everything depends on the time of day.

In the morning we need to wake up and want an invigorating energy, whereas in the evening we are more in need of calm.

During the day, we sometimes go there to let go, or after sport for a good hot shower. It is a space that hosts many moments of our day and, at the same time, says a lot about us.

Look at your bathroom, or a friend’s: how tidy it is, whether or not there are products on the edge of the basin, simplicity or abundance. This place is quite intimate and reveals certain parts of us.

It is particularly important to ventilate this space well, to prevent damp from settling in and causing damage. If you don’t have a window, you must have an air extraction system and leave the door slightly open during the day.

As for lighting, I always recommend being able to create at least two moods in your bathroom. Bright overall lighting to see clearly and give yourself a boost in the morning, for example, to get ready or put on make-up. And softer lighting for the evening, to relax and let go. Don’t forget direct lighting above the mirror: it will either help you see more clearly in addition to the main ceiling light, or create a gently lit atmosphere when it is more a time for relaxing.

As for decor, anything goes!

This is a space where you can really go all out. We go in a few times a day but never stay more than an hour. So we can afford to be bold and mix materials and colours (wallpaper, tiles, paint, coloured lighting…). Think of this room as an experience you will treat yourself to several times a day, and one that will evolve.

We mix materials, colours, unusual objects and quirky bath towels; you can change the mood regularly thanks to the different items that make up your bathroom: bath products, household linen, mirrors…

Just look at some hotels today, which mix styles and colours beautifully to offer you an experience you will remember.

So allow yourself a bit of fun in this space and give in to your most eccentric whims!
